(5) Learn how students are changing the world one project at a time

"Learn how students are changing the world one project at a time" is a 9-part series from a group of Hong Kong students who are using innovative engineering to improve their community and ultimately the world. Take a look at what these students have created.

Ultimate BBQ Helper

BBQing is a very popular activity in Hong Kong. However, for beginners, it is difficult to identify whether BBQ food is fully cooked or not. This project aims to develop a BBQ helper for beginners in order to identify the progress of cooking BBQ food (see Figure 5-1). The temperature of the BBQ food and the fire around the BBQ are measured by sensors and then the system calculates and determines whether the BBQ food is fully cooked or not (see Figure 5-2).

Up to now, the app to provide information to users is being developed (see Figure 5-3). The design of the hardware part with a BBQ fork is drafted: the temperature of the sensor is next to the fork when the fork rotates during the BBQ cooking process (see Figure 5-4 to 5-6). However, one temperature sensor does not provide sufficient information to determine whether the food is cooked or not. The team are considering installing more sensors to make a better estimate.

Now they are working on communicating between the mobile app and the hardware part, and will be conduct experiments to test the system.
