(2) Learn how students are changing the world one project at a time

"Learn how students are changing the world one project at a time" is a 9-part series from a group of Hong Kong students who are using innovative engineering to improve their community and ultimately the world. Take a look at what these students have created.

Tracking Watch

Hiking is popular in Hong Kong and it is important to find an appropriate way to go back if you get lost. Many mobile apps use GPS signals to solve this problem but sometimes they cannot access GPS signals when hiking. This project aims to design a hardware device to solve this problem without using GPS signals. The device records the path and shows you how to get back (see Figure 2-1), by saving the change of accelerators and the compass in a mobile and counts the travelling path (see Figure 2-2).

Up to now, they can measure the temperature and the pressure properly (see Figure 2-3). Moreover, the readings can be displayed on the LCD (see Figure 2-4). The sensor then detects the rotated angle but the performance is not stable (see Figure 2-5). This can be due to a connection problem. The following videos shows the measurement, LCD display and the detection of the rotated angle.
