There may not be any Mo Salah’s, Cristiano Ronaldo’s or Gareth Bale’s on show this Friday evening (despite Milan Ceko’s belief in his own ability), however there will be plenty of pride and passion on display as employees from RS Components and Sony UK Technology Centre go head-to-head with both silverware and bragging rights at stake in the Raspberry Pi Derby 2018.
The battlefield is ready at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium as a strong squad from the Pencoed based Sony Technology Centre seek to avenge their 4-1 defeat at the hands of RS during the inaugural match in Wales last year.
RS Components’ manager Andy Keenan, on the other hand, will be demanding that his side does not leave Leicester empty-handed and that the trophy once again returns to Northamptonshire.
However, the main goal is to raise money for a worthy cause, with the match in aid of Children with Cancer UK. What is the Raspberry Pi Derby?
Since 2012, RS Components have worked alongside the Sony UK Technology Centre and the Raspberry Pi Foundation to manufacture millions of Raspberry Pi’s, a series of low cost, credit-card sized single board computers that plug into a computer monitor or TV. Designed and manufactured in the UK, it enables people of all ages to explore computing, learning how to program in languages like Scratch and Python. Originally targeted for classrooms, the Raspberry Pi range has enjoyed wide success with computer enthusiasts and makers worldwide.

The Raspberry Pi Derby is an annual football match between the manufacturer and distributor of the Raspberry Pi.
Children with Cancer UK
Children with Cancer UK (CwC) is a charity that funds invaluable research into childhood cancers and developing the very best treatment for these. Currently, CwC is funding over 50 live research projects, along with providing both financial and emotional support for families whose children are undergoing treatment.
RS Components has supported Children with Cancer since 2017, with an aim to raise over £150,000 to contribute towards the ground-breaking research and treatments they provide. As a company, we are really passionate about this cause, as a number of our colleagues have had direct experiences in their own families and without the critical research into the causes and treatments of childhood cancers, outcomes may have been very different.
