Tech that watches you from the inside

An innovative company based in France has developed two unique wearables that can quickly and painlessly and in real-time, monitor glucose and lactate levels found in the wearer's blood. We take a peek into what these two wearable are all about.

K’Watch Glucose, glucose monitoring without the pain

The wrist-worn K’Watch Glucose is a clever little wearable that uses a device called the K’apsul, incorporating a revolutionary biosensor design that monitors the wearer's blood glucose levels in real-time when it is in contact with the skin. This smart little bio-sensors method of monitoring the blood is affectionately known as ‘Skintaste Technology’ which certainly sounds more appealing that a needle in the arm. Anyone who suffers from diabetes should appreciate this handy bit of functionality, alleviating the need for those awkward and painful blood tests and providing 24/7 monitoring of their bloodwork.

Pain-free to use, this wearable can take unlimited measurements over a 30 day period with the results instantly available via the touchscreen on the device as well as via the dedicated app. The app can store all this data and provide a full history of the user's glucose levels which, for example, can be interpreted by a medical professional.

Real-Time

The K’Watch Glucose can be worn anywhere and at any time, such as during sporting activities and exercise when glucose levels are known to spike and during your working day and when asleep. Besides providing important data concerning blood glucose levels over a period of time, the K’Watch will also send alerts to users to check their blood glucose levels, keeping diabetics one-step ahead of the game. It’s also a watch as well!

Diabetes is a growing problem, affecting upwards of 415 million people worldwide, leading to many complications including kidney failure, heart disease, amputation, and is said to be responsible for 1.5 million deaths per year. The designers, PK Paris, is certainly making inroads into helping people actively monitor their blood glucose levels, which should help, at least in some part, to curtail those frightening statistics mentioned earlier.

K’Watch Athlete, monitor your lactate levels

Much like the K’Watch Glucose, the K’Watch Athlete utilises the same biosensor as its glucose monitoring cousin that monitors lactate levels instead of glucose. Now, anyone who goes to the gym or is on the very active side will be familiar with Lactic Acid, this substance is produced during both long and short-term muscular exertion. Once you start producing more lactate than can be removed by the body your muscles begin to fill with this substance, leading to the cessation of contraction of the muscles being trained, hitting that wall. Monitoring Lactic Acid in the blood can determine how well the muscles react and recover to exposure to this by-product of exercise and by finding your lactate threshold you can optimise training and recovery periods and improve your competitive edge.

Accuracy is the key

Currently, measuring the level of lactic acid in the body requires drawing blood post exercise, which means that you are not exactly measuring the true figure when you are ‘under-load’. The results of testing the blood post exercise can only provide the best guess of what your body is actually doing during exertion, certainly room for improvement there. The K’Watch Athlete steps-up to the plate, monitoring lactate levels in real-time, which ultimately means you can add the element of precision to lactate monitoring that has until now, been missing from the serious athletes training arsenal.

For those athletes who take their training seriously the K’Watch Athlete with its continuous monitoring is going to prove itself invaluable to their training regime. Worn around the arm, and akin to its stablemate the K’Watch Glucose, the K’Watch Athlete has many of the same features, providing 30 days of real-time monitoring and syncing with the dedicated app, everything you need to keep that pesky fatigue at bay and set you on the path to Olympic Glory!
