Fan Types - Why choose an Axial fan

My background is in Mechanical & Production Engineering however working for ebm-papst that has expanded into electro-mechanical, some electronic and acoustic engineering. When it comes to acquiring and passing on knowledge, I try to keep it as simple and as least painful as possible. I am happy to receive feedback and if there are any questions that arise from anything that gets published. I'd like to know whether - and if so - how I can modify a fan to cause its output to be directed a few degrees off of parallel to the motor shaft to widen the distribution path. I know an oscillating fan accomplishes this effect by reorienting the axis of the motor shaft from side to side, but that causes intermittent airflow at every point. Would it be possible to accomplish this by bending each shaft of each blade back toward the input side by the same amount (a few degrees) & achieve more of a cone-shaped air output?

@PaulDalton - Hello Paul, Thanks for your question. The shape of the outlet flow pattern is affected by two aspects of the fan operation. Firstly how far the fan is mounted through the diaphragm that separates suction and pressure side will change the shape of the outlet flow. Secondly the pressure the fan operates against also changes the outlet flow. At low pressure the flow is very tubular in shape, with increasing pressure the shape becomes more conical. At stall point the air pattern is turbulent, above stall the air pattern is radial. If you are looking for a more wider conical outlet pattern you may wish to consider a diagonal flow fan. This type of fan is a combination of radia and axial flow. The compromise is the "Air Throw" - i.e. how far the air movement will be percieved. More conical air patterns will diffuse over a shorter distance than a more tubular air pattern. If you need diagrams to excplain the concepts let me know .
