Air Quality Interview with Jodie Barnsley

Jude Pullen has been working on various Air Quality projects with DesignSpark, ranging from the ESDK to the Air Quality Canary: These utilise modern sensors from Sensirion, that are compact, accurate and can easily be adapted to your IoT projects. However, when it comes to the stage where you have collected all the data around an issue you feel passionately about - what next?

Jodie Barnsley is a Data Scientist, with a special interest in Air Quality, and was actually running PhD-level experiments through the Pandemic, when she realised that there were some interesting correlations between CO2 and Coronavirus. As well as giving a deeper-dive into the specifics of the various AQ sensors used in the ESDK, Jude also asks Jodie for her tips and advice on getting the most out of the sensors you have.

Some topics covered in the Interview:

  • Why is Indoor Air Quality as big an issue as Outdoor Air Quality?
  • Why are CO2 levels rising so dramatically?
  • Why Temp and Humidity Sensors are critical for calibrating your other sensors.
  • Pollen and Allergies.
  • How will our Homes get 'Smarter' with Tech and Big Data (from AQ Sensors)?
  • A deeper dive on VOC / MOX Sensors, as well as NO2 sensor considerations.
  • The science behind the sensors like CO2 and Particulate.
  • Can small and cheap be useful and valid?
  • Accuracy vs Precision - considering how to best use your sensors and interpret the data.
  • New areas of AQ awareness: from Beds to our Workplaces.
  • Broadband vs Discrete/Specific Sensors.
  • Activist Engineering - now is the time to get involved in Air Quality Sensing and Monitoring!
