will reducing file size improve performance?

bkklhryyz

I've only been using dsm for a couple of months and I was loving it until I started making more complex (to me) designs.  Still very simplistic stuff compared to what I see others working on, but enough to make dsm PAINFULLY slow.  So slow I thought at first it had crashed but waiting many minutes shows it is just doing it's thing.  I loved dsm so much that to resolve the problem I finally upgraded my Win7 Samsung i3 6gb ram notebook to a Win10 asus zenbook flip14 ryzen7 12gb ram. Loving the zenbook for everything except dsm. boots from cold in 10 seconds, no lag (except dsm), small size for travel, hook up monitor and bt mouse/kb for home, benchmarks well (other than graphics) yada yada yada.

Unfortunately, same problem. The new machine can handle bigger files than the old one but as soon as the files hit about 24mb dsm falls apart.

CPU & GPU are both around 15% but memory is at 98% with spaceclaim taking most of it and I have just found out that ram is not upgradeable on the zenbook.

I have tried suggestions posted by @ Tim Heeney and @Faucibus about reducing render quality and eliminating power selection. I've turned off anti aliasing and animated view changes.  There has been only a very minor improvement in performance, which leads me to think that the problem is almost entirely related to file size and memory usage.

I've read a support article about adjusting custom tessalation settngs on objects but I'm not sure what values to put in (at the moment tesselation quality is set to 1, clicking on custom shows all subsettings at 0)

Any suggestions on how to reduce file size would be much appreciated.  All of my solids are placed in components (although I don't understand how that reduces the file size unless there is a further step that I have missed).  Or maybe I am looking in the wrong direction.  If so, any other tips would be helpful.
