The Interactive Air Quality Map: Vlog 2 - Developing a mobile air quality logger

The interactive air quality map is designed as a fixed installation to be placed in public spaces. As an Internet of Things (IoT) device, it relies on multiple data sources to operate effectively. However, currently, there is only one active air quality monitor in Lagos, which poses a challenge. It is evident that a single data point cannot provide sufficient information to create a comprehensive area map.

This realization led me to contemplate a solution: What if that solitary sensor could be mobile? This question sparked a new perspective, as the IAQM could benefit from a sensor that can freely move around.

By implementing a mobile air quality sensing system, the project becomes highly scalable. Even though it may be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve complete coverage of all the areas represented on the map with a single mobile sensor, the coverage can be improved by incorporating additional mobile sensors. As the project expands, the coverage of air quality data in Lagos will grow accordingly.

To establish this network of mobile air quality loggers, I have opted for a particular approach: equipping taxis with specially designed air quality sensors. By integrating these sensors on taxis, they can collect and transmit air quality data as they navigate the streets of Lagos. This enables the continuous gathering of real-time air quality information, which can then be reported and incorporated into the interactive air quality map.

What I really hope to achieve in developing a novel air quality sensor is to attain flexibility in the collection of air quality data. Size plays a crucial role in achieving this goal, as a smaller sensor offers greater versatility and portability. Additionally, the inconspicuous nature of the sensor is also a key consideration. Various other factors will influence the final design of the logger, all working together to create an efficient and effective solution for gathering air quality data.
