Taking small steps but making a big difference

Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL) and RS Components have recently signed an RS University Partnership agreement for one year. The partnership looks to foster RHUL’s next generation of engineers with the software tools and resources to shape the future.

The partnership looks to leverage the growing need for engineers in society. In particular, the need for female engineers. Presently, the number of male engineers heavily outweighs female engineers. So in order to combat this gap, RHUL is in the process of constructing a brand new purpose-built science building with its main ethos being ‘Creativity’.

Professor David Howard is leading this cause for gender equality in engineering. As Head of RHUL’s Electronic Engineering department, Professor David and his team has created and joined several campaigns for gender equality such as #9percentisnotenough and #WomeninEngineering. This comes as no surprise as RHUL was founded with women at its heart.

Founded in 1879 by Thomas Holloway, it formally opened to students in 1886 by Queen Victoria. Later Royal Holloway and Bedford College joined to form one higher education all-women’s college. This women-focused legacy still continues today.
The RHUL and RS partnership looks to empower the need for women in engineering. RS has partnered up to support and endorse this campaign. The partnership looks to enable any student engineer at RHUL to get easy access to all of RS Components’ support infrastructure and product expertise which is so vital during academic projects.

The new RHUL Electronic Engineering degree will begin in September 2017. The DesignSpark (DS) community and tools will be available to the students together with all the training, teaching materials and technical support. RS and DS will be working closely with RHUL in order to ensure that more Universities use RHUL’s model across the UK, Europe and the world.
