After a 19th-place finish at Formula Student in 2022, SHU Racing are aiming to build on this for 2023. The SR13 has utilised previous years’ work and successes, while also developing other subsystems on the car, such as the underfloor.
Our car has a full carbon fibre monocoque and aerodynamics package, and we have also developed a structural nosecone as our impact attenuator. Changes have also been made to the suspension geometry and pedal box configuration to improve the handling of the car.
RS Build Fund
In March, SHU Racing were awarded the RS Build Fund by RS Grassroots, giving us £1000 on components, tools or anything else we need from RS to help us build the SR13.
The RS PRO 10 Piece Electronics Tool Kit proved to be really useful for creating the wiring loom and the RS PRO Infrared Thermometer was also used during powertrain tests to understand the thermodynamics of the engine. We also utilised the Milwaukee Cordless Die Grinder for making adjustments to parts and tolerances.
Many components were used for the driver’s environment, such as the CRC Green Polyurethane Foam for the seat. The expanding foam was ejected into a bag with the driver sat in the car so that it would mould to their shape and provide a comfortable seat insert for them. We used EOZ Illuminated Momentary Push Button Switches on the dashboard for the ignition, the engine start and a neutral button. Omron Pin Plunger Micro Switch and RS PRO Neodymium Magnets were used on the steering wheel for the flappy paddle shifters; the magnets worked alongside a spring to allow the paddle to return to its neutral position after it had been pressed down onto the switch to change gear. The electrical signal from this is sent through an umbilical cord through the back of the steering wheel to the ECU.
SR13 Car Launch
On Sunday 2nd July we finally unveiled the SHU Racing SR13, with a group of sponsors, university staff, friends and family there. We’re so grateful for everyone’s support and we certainly wouldn’t be there without it, including RS Grassroots’ generous support with the RS Build Fund. We’re really excited that Formula Student UK is just 2 weeks away, hopefully, it will be a positive end to what has been a great year.
