I wish that the orientation cube widget (bottom left of the model area) looked and behaved more like this:
Its a small change to the on-screen graphic; would take no more screen real estate, and the orientation behaviour I envisage is almost exactly like the Snap tool behaviour (as used in the above demo) except that it would only reorientate, not take it upon itself to also adjust the zoom. (Which BTW would make the existing Snap tool far more useful and usable. )
Also, the rotation ring around the orientation cube would be much more useful if it gave an on screen display of the degrees rotated (relative to the pre-move position.)
