Software does not start.

After I input username and password, window shuts and nothing else happens.

Sounds like you're accessing internet via proxy. This is filtering out the request to DesignSpark servers which will licence your copy of DSM.
Try tethering to your smartphone for internet and login to activate again.
After you have access to DSM, you can switch back to your Ethernet or original connection.
