Designspark in HKUST Summer Institute

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)’s Summer Institute Program is the largest event in summer for Secondary School Students.  Started since 2011, the Summer Institutes offered more than d 25 credit-bearing courses in Science, Engineering, Business and Management, Humanities and Social Science for the senior secondary school students (Secondary 4 and 5, or Grades 10 and 11) a head start in their pursuit of university education and the opportunities to learn about their interests and passions at an early age.

In order to let the students to practice what they learnt in the secondary school to electronic and computer engineering, Prof. Tim WOO offered a course SISP 1303 - Intelligent Sensing Technologies aimed at encouraging students' interest in engineering, this course is designed to illustrate the interesting link between science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In order to get the students explored to new design technology, the RS DesignSpark was introduced to the students. The student can use the DesignSpark PCB software to build the circuit board they developed for the Piano. During the experiment, the students have chance to build their own speaker library and make a 3D model of the PCB.

The students enjoyed the course and below are some comments quoted from their reflective statement at the end of the course:

“This course has provided me with ample knowledge about this subject in an interesting and fun way. I am looking forward to studying engineering in university and can’t wait.”

“After participating in this course, I am sure I have a more in-depth cognition about the sensors and I will absolutely make use of this knowledge in the future. I am convinced that it is such a wonderful summer, and I would like to appreciate the efforts of all the helpers made.”

Finally, after students finished the course, the course credit that they earned will be able to count towards their undergraduate study at HKUST.
