How do I split an extrusion WITHOUT deleting part of it?

I have a cylinder and a plane through the center of it lengthwise (longways) to split it in half. I know how to split this cylinder along this plane. The issue is, instead of getting two separate halves to work with, I end up being forced to delete one of the halves. Can someone please tell me how to do this?
