Spark erosion enables the machining of even very hard metals with almost no forces being transferred to the workpiece or to the CNC machine. This means that metals can be machined even with the mechanics of a 3D printer.

By using a DC motor (321-3186) as a "Wagner's hammer", a steel disc can be engraved. The motor is switched in such a way that the electrical circuit is closed via the workpiece. The motor must be polarized so that the electrode is then raised. If the circuit is interrupted again, the electrode is moved back to the workpiece surface via a spring.
The electrode "hammers" on the workpiece, the sparks created when the circuit opens, erode the metal. A video shows the process:
