wireless comms from engine compartment to car interior

Boss

This is a very general question as I'm just starting with wireless data transfer. I wish to collect data from inside a car engine compartment (under the hood) and receive this and display inside the car. No bodywork modifications!
Has anyone attempted this using those low cost nRF24L... modules that seem to be everywhere? Is a more recent car say in the last 10 years electrically less noisy than the older ones and hence would allow this? There appears to be enough gaps around the bonnet for it not to be an efficient screen and radiate RF to the receiver which would be effectively behind the glass windscreen.
