what smd IC has 8 pins, drives red/green LEDs on pins 2 & 4, provides a logic output on pin 5, supply on pin 1 and GND on pin 8? It is used in a Shark vacuum cleaner motor controller.

It is probably a microcontroller. There are many different ones that have power and ground on pins 1 and 8 (for example, in the Microchip PIC and AVR families). The other pins are configurable as input, output, or both, in conjunction with the program loaded into the microcontroller.
