Suspected hardware fault in new Raspberry PI

Regarding: Raspberry Pi 4 8gb Starter Kit

RS Stock No.: 209-7566

Mfr. Part No.: Pi-4-8gb-StarterKit

Manufacturer: Okdo

Hi,

I bought a Raspberry PI 4b 8GB Starter Kit, on click & collect (Order number: 195444620, Date ordered: 14/1/2025) and collected it yesterday from your Dublin store.

Initially I tried several times to install the PI 64bit OS Lite but after a couple of flashes of the green Act LED, and the ethernet port, all activity would then stop. I recreated the image several times, with different options, but I got the same result each time.

Eventually I started trying OS images with the desktop option, and using a screen and keyboard.  On each boot, a multicoloured square would appear on the screen as the activity LED flashed but then the screen would go blank and all activity stopped.

I tried everything I could think of, e.g. different SD cards, a USB stick, no customisation options in setup, 32 bit OS, keyboard, mouse and ethernet cables unplugged/replugged etc.  But one thing did make a difference - No Boot Media.

Note: All the boot images above were created with Imager software downloaded today, v1.8.5, and all images passed the verification step without issue.

Without any boot media the RPI loads the Install OS screen, but cannot continue without any USB-MSD media. The Diagnostic screen shows it continuing to retry, waiting 25 seconds and retrying but failing to open device 'sdcard'. With ethernet, and pressing <Shift>, I am able to select the network install.  The 31MB Installer download completes normally and the RPI reboots but, as before, it again hangs after a few flashes of the activity LED.

I don't believe the LED flashes are presenting an error code.  There is always a brief flicker at the moment of power on.  There are two longer flashes a second or two later, each one perhaps one second long.  Sometimes there is a brief flicker after, but usually there is not.

I suspect there is a fault in some component of my RPI hardware, a component that's critical in the boot for OS installation but is not used to present the "Install an OS" screen or subsequent "net install" download. I assume the OS Installer is read from RAM when it next hangs.  After a power cycle the "Install an OS" screen appears again. I believe the problem cannot be caused by faulty USB-MSD media.

I've recorded some videos on my phone but they are all much to big to send (>100MB).

Let me know if there is anything else you wish me to try.  Otherwise please advise me what I have do to obtain a working replacement, and how soon I can receive it.

Thanks, Dermot.
