Stand up comedy in Virtual Reality
The wonderful Bec Hill, who co-hosts the DesignSpark Podcasts with me and Harriet Braine, did an amazing show in Edinburgh this year.
It was called "I'll be Bec" and is a show all about the future and our potential when it comes to communication and technology.
Sadly, I couldn't go to Edinburgh – and nor could thousands of others. As the show is very theatrical, it is too expensive for Bec to tour on an independent budget – without giving away too many spoilers, the show required an entire team to set up and perform due to the special effects and props used. (I helped to make one of the props!).
It *could* have been filmed, but a certain magic is lost once it's on-screen. And with comedy, you're essentially watching and listening to the audience laugh.
So, for the first time ever, a stand-up comedy show (Bec's show!) is being added to LIVR – the world’s first virtual reality content platform dedicated to theatre. LIVR offers a "fully immersive 360° VR experience that transports you into the audience at some of the best live performances; on-demand and from the comfort of home."
This means we can all get the full show experience as Bec intended when she wrote it: with all the twists, turns and surprises included. Laughing WITH the audience, and yet still be in the comfort of our own homes.
It releases on Friday November 8th – a one-month LIVR subscription is just under £6 – cheaper than the full price ticket for just Bec's show in Edinburgh!
I may be biased, but I think it's going to be worth a watch just for the props, let alone the thrill of being one of the first to experience live comedy without having to go out and put up with the rest of the audience!
