Silicon Labs 10kV Surge Protection

Sometimes environments can get really rough.  For example, where voltage surges can reach 10kV and high value products must be protected.  Helping to mitigate these effects is the Si86xxT Family of digital isolators from Silicon Labs that are rated to 10kV surge protection.

The Si86xxxT is a family of multi-channel digital isolators that are based on the proprietary capacitive isolation technology that enables low propagation delay and skew, low emissions, high noise immunity and high reliability and long lifetime. The Si86xxxT family has products ranging from dual channel to quad channel in wide body packages to accommodate the higher isolation rating associated with these products. The high-voltage isolation barrier has been enhanced to withstand 10 kV surge hits safely. Family highlights include:

  • 10 kV surge capability, VDE 0884-10 reinforced rating
  • Fastest and most accurate timing specs – low propagation delay (10 ns) and low skew (1 ns)
  • Highest noise immunity (CMTI) of 100 kV/µs, and lowest electro-magnetic (EM) noise emissions (20 dB lower than ADI products)
  • Long lifetimes under high voltage conditions – 100 years at 1000 V

The Si864xxT EVB allows designers to quickly evaluate capabilities and functionality, either by driving inputs to logic high or low, or injecting signals to the header pins via single wires or a 2 x 6 ribbon cable.
