Salford Racing at a glance

Salford Racing is the Formula Student Team of the University of Salford. Comprised of students responsible for engineering, business, and media duties, Salford Racing’s principal aim is to design and build a race car to compete in the IMechE Formula Student competition, as well as make the best out of the wonderful opportunity Formula Student provides to show our skills and making connections with like-minded peers.

The passion of our team was as high as ever in the latest Formula Student event in 2021. Despite the challenges we faced, we arrived at the live event in Silverstone with the intention of gaining valuable feedback from the judges.

Our car is developed and manufactured in-house using the skillset of our team, while parts that cannot be created using our facilities are sourced from local manufacturers with whom we have strong ties.

We meet every Wednesday not only to work on our car but also to get to know each other. We are aware that to get the best out of the Formula Student experience, we need to help each other grow. There has never been an age/year limit to join the team, and we believe the only prerequisite needed is whether someone is willing to work in a team environment to push the rest of the team forward.

We regularly have presentations before the meetings where people can present their new designs, and we encourage every member to share their ideas. We think this is a great opportunity to support each other both technically and personally.

With the backing of our university, our sponsors and our industry partners, we are more motivated than ever to push ourselves to the limit and build a car that is technically superior to anything we have ever built. Our first rival is ourselves, and as long as we can improve upon our own projects, we believe we are on an upwards path.

Some of our projects and events

Welding Academy: A few members of our team attended The Welding Academy for a course in MIG welding. The course has taught some of the technical and practical skills associated with MIG welding and will give the opportunity for more in-house manufacturing in Salford Racing. All attending members successfully completed the course, while three of them met the industry standard: BS 4873-1:1982.

Track Day with PDC Racing: Our partner PDC racing has kindly offered to host us at the Oulton Park circuit to give us a chance to experience how a professional race team operates. Using a Honda Civic Type-R as the car of the day, our team became familiar with the checks and processes associated with a typical test day and race weekend. We also got the chance to work on the car to get hands-on experience.

Formula Student’s “Learn to Win”: We listened to important talks by the judges and sponsors of the Formula Student competition. This gave us an early insight into the changes in the competition, and how we can best prepare ourselves and our car.

Our goals for 2022

Our most important goal is to pass scrutineering. In 2021, we had built one of our first physical cars and failed to pass scrutineering, and it’s only natural for our goal this year would be to achieve what we couldn’t achieve last year.

After that, we are aiming to be more competitive in dynamic events. After learning from our past mistakes, we know where and how to improve. We are aiming to build a car that is powerful, stable and reliable enough that would allow us to focus completely on pushing it to the limit without worrying about breakdowns.

This year’s car: The SR22

We knew we had to start working on the car early, so that’s what we’ve been doing. Over the months leading up to Christmas, our chassis, aerodynamics, electrical, statics, and powertrain teams worked tirelessly to get their base designs ready to hit the ground running when we came back from the Christmas break, and that’s exactly what we did.

Since the beginning of 2022, our team has begun building and testing the SR22 to prepare it for the events in July. We are on track and hopeful that we’re going to have a successful run in this year’s competition.

How the Formula Student + UAS Build Fund impacted us

We were operating with older tools and facilities, and we were having trouble turning our designs into reality as effectively as we could have been doing. With the Formula Student + UAS Build Fund, we will be able to get the parts we need in the highest quality possible.
