Robotic Lawn Aerator - Part 1

Robotic Lawn Aerator is a Group Design Project led by a group of 6 fourth year Mechanical Engineering Student from the University of Southampton. Our goal is to design, manufacture and test a GPS-guided autonomous robot that can aerate lawns.

What is the area/time design goal. I would consider using a device that covers 0.5 acre/1 hour.

It looks like there is only vertical movement on the drills, I'd therefore assume that you are going to be stopping the movement whilst drilling.

Are you detecting the vertical force to see if the drill has hit a hard object i.e. a rock?

@davecole Hi. Thank you for your comment. Yes, we plan to stop the motion completely before drilling. The problem of encountering obstacles while drilling is a one that we are actively looking into. One proposed solution is to monitor current draw of the stepper motor which would spike up when the linear actuator faces resistances.
