PWr in Space: Reaching New Heights of Student Rocketry

Who are we?

PWr in Space is a student research group operating at Wrocław University of Science and Technology since 2017. We bring together students from various faculties who share a passion for space technologies and rocketry.

Our main project, PoliWRocket, focuses on designing and building experimental sounding rockets from scratch which allows us to develop necessary technical skills. Every year, we participate in international competitions such as the Spaceport America Cup (SAC) in the USA and the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC) in Portugal, where we gain valuable experience and showcase our innovative designs.

What drives us

What sets the PWr in Space team apart is our fascination with technology and our pursuit of creative solutions. Our rocket projects consist of numerous components—ranging from structural elements to electronics and fueling systems. Given the interdisciplinary nature of our work, we rely on the diverse skills of our members to bring each project to life. Every new endeavour is a challenge, but also an opportunity to push boundaries and expand our knowledge.

Our work is not only about technological advancement—it is also about inspiring future generations of engineers and scientists. We actively participate in conferences and events, encouraging young people to pursue careers in STEM fields and space exploration.

With RS’s support, we will have the opportunity to further develop our capabilities, implement new solutions, and make our projects better. The products acquired through this partnership will be invaluable during the execution and testing phases of our work.

Our project

This year, we are introducing significant changes to our projects, particularly in our flagship initiative, PoliWRocket. Our goal for the latest rocket project, R7 Together, is to implement a liquid-fueled rocket engine to replace our current hybrid propulsion system. This transition requires the integration of new technological solutions across multiple systems, ensuring the successful launch of our vehicle.

What’s new

The PWr in Space team has tackled many challenges, and each new project is an opportunity to learn. This year, our rocket design demands the implementation of advanced technologies that we are introducing for the first time. One of our key initiatives is the development of a bi-liquid fueling station, designed to handle two separate liquid propellants stored in dedicated tanks within the rocket and injected during flight.

A major challenge we face is precisely measuring the amount of nitrous oxide (N₂O) introduced into the rocket’s tanks. During the fueling process, we must carefully monitor pressure levels, as they significantly impact the rocket’s achievable altitude.

To address this, we have designed a specialized fueling station equipped with technology to monitor pressure and prevent valve freezing—an issue caused by temperature fluctuations during fueling. The revamped system includes improved load cells and more reliable electronics, eliminating drift and noise problems encountered in previous designs. In other words, to enhance our system’s performance, we have integrated components that measure the amount of injected fuel more accurately—similar to an advanced scale that precisely weighs the fluids. These upgrades ensure the highest level of precision, which is essential for success in competitions such as EuRoC and SAC.

Beyond technical advancements, safety remains our top priority. Our fueling system includes automatic safety valves that activate in response to unexpected pressure surges, ensuring a secure fueling process.

What’s next?

Striving to be among the top student rocketry teams in Europe, this project plays a crucial role in strengthening our expertise. The fueling station is essential to reaching our target flight altitudes, making its development a significant milestone for our team. Our ambition is not just to compete, but to redefine what student teams can achieve in space engineering.
