NVIDIA: AI helping Environmental Sustainability

by billd700

One area Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to push the boundaries of what technology can achieve and is becoming a crucial tool to help the fight against environmental challenges, is in Environmental Sustainability.

Let’s take a look at 5 areas AI is contributing to help improve the environment:

  • Climate Monitoring and Prediction: AI can process vast amounts of data from sensors and satellites, which can be used to enhance the accuracy of climate models, which then leads to improvements in predictions of weather patterns and the changes happening to the climate, so as to assess the impact of environmental policies.
  • Sustainable Agriculture: Smart farming technologies are helping to transform agriculture by using sensors to monitor soil health, drones to survey both the land and crop growth, and satellites to monitor the weather. AI can help to optimise the use of water, fertilisers, and pesticides, leading to more sustainable farming practices and higher yields.

  • Wildlife conservation: AI-powered drones and camera traps are used to monitor wildlife populations and track poaching activities. Machine learning models analyse images and videos to identify species and detect illegal activities, providing valuable data that aids in conservation efforts.
  • Renewable energy: AI can optimise the deployment and management of energy sources, like with traditional Solar and Wind, but potentially new sources being developed that generate energy from motion (waves), like with the WITT system. Predicting energy production and demand, AI helps integrate renewable energy into the grid more effectively, which in turn reduces the reliance on fossil fuels and promotes cleaner energy solutions.

  • Waste management:  Machine learning models can be used to identify and categorise different types of waste material. As can be seen in the video below, during Jude Pullen's visit to Lion Vision, they show how using a high-end advanced NVIDIA platform, they can detect vapes that contain hazardous lithium-ion batteries, from being crushed, so reducing the chance of chemical fires in recycling plants or preventing them from going to landfill.

Above: George Hawkins (Lion Vision) and Jude Pullen (reporting for RS Group), in front of the Machine Learning system, running on NVidia, being trained to detect vapes, batteries and sweets!

NVIDIA is committed to sustainability, as can be seen from their continuous innovation and development of AI technologies that drive environmental responsibility and efficiency as can be seen in their Corporate Sustainability Report from 2024. With their products and platforms, such as NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin 64G Development Kit (253-9662) , being instrumental in helping to develop various environmental sustainability efforts.
