MTCH9010 #2: Smarter, Simpler Liquid Sensing Under a Minute

by Microchip_MCUs

In the earlier article, we showed how to get liquid detection up and running with zero coding. That approach is great for quick prototyping, but what happens when your design needs to handle different types of liquids, run on low power, or scale into a production-ready system? That’s where the MTCH9010 (064-4321) really elevates the design.

Key Challenges with Liquid Detection

Designing a robust liquid detection system isn’t as simple as it sounds. Some of the most common hurdles include:

  • Different liquid properties: Conductive liquids (like water and electrolytes) and non-conductive liquids (like oils, fuels, alcohols) usually require different sensing methods.

  • System overhead: Traditional solutions often need extra circuitry, calibration routines, or custom firmware development.

  • Power consumption: Many sensors continuously draw current, making them unsuitable for remote or battery-powered devices.

MTCH9010 at a Glance

The MTCH9010 (064-4321) is a turnkey liquid detection IC that solves these challenges by integrating both sensing approaches into one compact device:

  • Capacitive mode for non-conductive liquids (oils, fuels, alcohols)

  • Conductive mode for ionic liquids (water, coolants, cleaning agents)

Switching between modes is as simple as changing a pin connection, no extra sensors or complex configuration needed.

Flexible Output Options

The MTCH9010 adapts to different integration levels with multiple outputs:

  • Digital output: A straightforward high/low signal for simple leak detection

  • UART output: Provides real-time diagnostics such as liquid properties and sensor health

  • Heartbeat pin: Confirms sensor operation and flags potential system faults

Designed for Power Efficiency

The IC is built with low-power systems in mind:

  • Sleep current down to 1 µA

  • Configurable sleep periods (1-256 seconds) for adjustable detection intervals

  • Wake-on-request mode for event-driven sensing

These features make it particularly well-suited for IoT nodes, wireless leak sensors, or any long-term, battery-powered system.

Where It Fits Best

With its combined sensing capability and low-power design, the MTCH9010 is a strong fit across a wide range of applications:

  • Home appliances - Detecting leaks in washing machines, dishwashers, or water heaters

  • Industrial systems - Monitoring pipelines, tanks, or processing equipment

  • Medical devices - Tracking flow or detecting blockages in IV lines and dialysis systems

  • Remote sensing - Smart agriculture, environmental monitoring, and outdoor equipment

Liquid Detection Made Easy with the MTCH9010

The Bottom Line

By bringing together capacitive and conductive sensing in a single, low-power IC, the MTCH9010 (064-4321) makes liquid detection both simpler and smarter. It reduces design overhead, eliminates the need for custom firmware, and still provides flexibility for advanced monitoring through UART and diagnostics.

If you’ve started with our zero-coding prototype, the MTCH9010 is the logical next step to take your design from proof-of-concept to production-ready.
