Meet the UCL HyperMile Racing Team
Our ground-breaking energy efficiency equivalent of 5,500 MPG has set a new benchmark for UK teams. We proudly earned the Data & Telemetry Award at the Shell Eco-marathon Europe & Africa, demonstrating our vehicle's capability - it could theoretically travel from London to Athens on a single litre of petrol!
Objectives
The team's vision extends beyond setting records; we are committed to leading a paradigm shift in sustainable transportation. We aim to break the world fuel efficiency record with the development of a hydrogen car, showcasing hydrogen propulsion as a viable, sustainable technology.
Methodology
The UCL HyperMile car exemplifies our strategic approach to maximizing vehicle efficiency through the utilization of advanced materials and optimized powertrain technology. Weighing only 38kg when race-ready, our carbon-fibre monocoque vehicle stands as a testament to remarkable engineering. Employing a "Pulse and Coast" strategy, it operates on minimal energy levels while delivering impressive performance. Recent track tests have yielded promising results, with over 40 laps completed consistently and a notable 30% efficiency increase compared to competitors. These achievements lay a solid foundation for our participation in the upcoming Shell Eco-marathon.
Product
In our pursuit of maximum efficiency, we meticulously select every component, from wire strippers to high-quality cables and euro-boxes. Thanks to funding from the RS prize, we ensure that every part of our electrical system and powertrain is optimised for top-notch performance and reliability.
Next Steps
Looking ahead, our team is ready to take on the challenges of implementing a hydrogen powertrain, with a strong focus on achieving optimal efficiency. This involves strategic investments in fuel cell technology and thorough data analysis to ensure the smooth operation of this complex system. Our goal is ambitious: to maintain consistent performance while maximizing efficiency.
Recent successes in hydrogen fuel cell tests have bolstered our confidence in achieving a 55% efficiency using the Aerostak A300 in combination with a custom-designed supercapacitor bank.
As we gear up for the Shell Eco-marathon 2024, the UCL HyperMile team is proud to lead the way in sustainable technology and innovation. We extend an invitation to the DesignSpark community to join us on this exciting journey. Your support, interest, and enthusiasm are invaluable as we strive to set new standards for vehicle efficiency. Follow our progress, cheer us on, and become part of the movement driving sustainable technology forward.
Media
Our vehicle's chassis is currently being designed for a world record attempt. With sustainability in mind, the hemp fibre aeroshell is not only eco-friendly but also showcases our creative use of materials. The design process, facilitated by Fusion 360, ensures enhanced ergonomics and visibility, projecting our car into the stratosphere of efficiency exceeding 6,196 km/L.
