Manchester Stinger Motorsports Team

Comprising of approximately 150 dedicated students, the Manchester Stinger Motorsports team designs, builds, and races a car at Silverstone annually, with a history of competing across the globe. However, like many organizations, the team faced significant challenges during the pandemic, which had a profound impact on our operations and success.

The 2023 competition marked a pivotal moment for Manchester Stinger Motorsports, as it was the team's first post-pandemic appearance. With steadfast support from alumni, faculty, and industry partners, the team achieved impressive results in Static Events. However, they faced a setback when unable to pass Technical Scrutineering. This experience became a catalyst for growth and improvement, setting the stage for an ambitious 2024 season.

For the 2024 season, the team set a clear goal: to successfully navigate all static tests and compete in the dynamic events. The focus for their new car, MAN24, was to apply the valuable lessons learned from MAN23, with particular emphasis on enhancing packaging and ensuring strict rule compliance. This approach aligns with the team's broader objective of rebuilding their competitive edge in the Formula Student arena.

Support from RS

In pursuit of excellence, Manchester Stinger Motorsports has forged crucial partnerships with industry leaders such as RS Components, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and Cosworth. These collaborations have enabled the implementation of a new team policy centred on a data-driven approach to optimization and performance. This strategy aims to elevate the team's technical capabilities and decision-making processes.

A significant aspect of the 2024 preparations involved a complete overhaul of the electrical system, made possible through the support of RS Components. The electrics sub-team undertook the ambitious task of creating a full wiring loom for MAN24 from scratch. This project demanded extensive challenging work throughout the term and required a diverse array of tools, components, and equipment. From pressure sensors for the engine and brakes to connectors for wire termination and hundreds of meters of wire, the team's requirements were substantial.

The RS Grass Roots grant proved invaluable in this endeavour, providing the additional resources needed to procure high-quality parts and ensure the loom's construction met professional standards. Moreover, the grant enabled the team to upgrade existing tools and acquire new ones, expanding their capabilities for future projects.

The 2024 Competition

We are thrilled to report that thanks to the unwavering support of our partners, Manchester Stinger Motorsports experienced an incredibly successful 2024 competition. Our achievements this year have set a new benchmark for our team's performance and growth. Our EV concept team made us particularly proud, securing an impressive seventh place in the Concept Class. This outstanding result not only highlights our team's innovative thinking but also demonstrates the strong foundations we have laid in preparation for our exciting EV FS Class entry next year.

In the ICE FS Class, we achieved a significant milestone by passing five out of six static technical tests - a feat we have not accomplished in over five years. This success is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and improved technical capabilities of our team. While our progress was unfortunately halted due to a driveshaft failure during the final brake test, we remain incredibly proud of how far we have come this year.

These achievements would not have been possible without the steadfast support of our partners, including RS Components. Their contributions have been instrumental in facilitating our progress and helping us reach this position. We are immensely grateful for their belief in our team and their commitment to nurturing student innovation.

As we reflect on our success, we are incredibly excited for the road ahead. The lessons learned and progress made this year have energized our team and set the stage for even greater accomplishments. We are particularly enthusiastic about our upcoming EV entry next year and cannot wait to show the world what we have in store.

Our journey from the challenges of the pandemic to our current success demonstrates the resilience, innovation, and determination that define Manchester Stinger Motorsports. As we move forward, we remain committed to pushing boundaries, embracing innovative technologies, and continuing our upward trajectory in Formula Student competitions.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our partners, supporters, and team members who have been integral to our success. Together, we are not just building race cars; we are shaping the future of motorsport engineering and inspiring the next generation of innovators.
