LART – Formula Student: Accelerating Success with RS Support
Introduction to Our Formula Student Team
LART, formerly FSIPLeiria has been participating in Formula Student competitions since 2006 with the T-06 prototype. Over the years, the team has consistently pushed it’s boundaries, culminating in the development of the T-14 in 2014, a car with a complete aerodynamic package, and the T-22 in 2022, which focused on in-house development.
This season marks a significant milestone as we embark on our most ambitious project yet: creating our first-ever electric race car with autonomous capabilities. Despite our lack of experience in electric and autonomous vehicle technology, we thought we should follow market trends for the students to have a future impact in the industry.
Design and Development Challenges
Transitioning to an electric and autonomous vehicle presented several challenges. Integrating the battery with the chassis, while using suspension points from our combustion car, required extensive design adjustments. We also faced issues with electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the high-voltage system affecting the low-voltage systems.
Ensuring reliable soldering and optimizing components were crucial to address these challenges. Despite these hurdles, we rigorously tested subsystems to maintain performance and reliability.
The Role of RS in Our Success
RS has been a critical partner, providing essential electronic components that underpin our vehicle’s systems.
High-quality solder paste from RS have improved our soldering practices, while dependable LEDs and buttons have ensured flawless performance on track.
RS also supplied vital components for our high-voltage safety systems, including connectors, insulation materials, such as FR4, Nomex and Kapton tape, and electronic accessories like high-quality buttons, high-power LEDs for the dashboard and steering wheel.
This support has been fundamental in creating a high-performing and safe vehicle.
Team Development and Training
The collaboration with RS has not only enhanced our vehicle but also contributed to our team's growth.
Exposure to market-leading components has equipped our members with valuable skills and experience for their future careers. The partnership with RS serves as a significant reference for our students as they transition into the professional world.
Future Prospects and Goals
Aiming to excel in FSPT 2024 and refine our car for potential participation in the 2025 competitions, including FSG and FSA, this collaboration is instrumental in driving our innovation forward and achieving our future goals!
Conclusion
The support from RS has been integral to our shift towards electric and autonomous racing. As we look ahead, we are eager to build on this collaboration and drive further advancements in Formula Student. Thank you, RS, for your unwavering support.
