Happy international tea day DesignSparkers (for tomorrow, 15th December).

I was going to say that it is the 2nd most important day of the year – after coffee of course – but that was before I discovered that #TeaDay is not just about drinking tea all day. It’s actually about bringing civil rights to action for tea workers.

Launched in 2005 by small tea growers, trade unions and civil society organisations, the International Tea Day campaign aims to address the issues of worker wages and fair prices for small tea producers.

Celebrating International Tea Day

Take some time today to look at your favourite tea and make sure it supports Fairtrade. If not, find a new favourite brand!

I have done just that and discovered to my surprise that my favourite tea – Yorkshire Tea – is not officially classed as Fairtrade. The company that makes Yorkshire Tea (Taylors of Harrogate) points out, however, that Yorkshire Tea comes entirely from suppliers who have achieved Rainforest Alliance certification. As I understand it UTZ, Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade International, despite being separate organisations, all share similar goals and missions, so I’m hoping I can continue to drink Yorkshire Tea.

In the spirit of #TeaDay, let’s have a virtual cuppa together – simply share a pic of your favourite tea mug or tea colour. To kick things off here’s mine!
