ebm-papst is a manufacturer committed to the pursuit of energy efficiency. This has taken the company in some new and innovative directions. In this article, we look at the different technologies that ebm-papst are employing to help you save energy, save money and are good for the environment.
Efficiency - up to 79% savings
The easiest way to save energy is to build a product that uses less energy. It sounds silly when you say it out loud, but this is a fundamental lesson that ebm-papst have taken to their hearts. The development of more efficient electric motors, combined with advances in impellor and fan blade designs, allows ebm-papst fans and blowers to save energy, even when run continuously.
Take a look at this case study from ebm-papst to see examples of how EC technology saves energy.
Intelligent Control
Even an efficient fan will use energy if it runs constantly, but this is not always necessary. In systems where cooling is required only some of the time (during periods of peak demand, or when a machine is actually running), a fan controller can be used to reduce the energy supplied to the fan. In this way, a fan is only run at maximum performance when needed, and the overall energy expenditure is kept to a minimum.
In addition, if a fan is not constantly run at maximum speed, the overall lifespan of the fan is significantly increased, thus reducing the total-life costs of the fan. All of ebm-papst's EC fans are designed to be used with a fan controller, and ebm-papst have a wide selection from which to choose the right controller for your application. We took a look at the latest EC fan controllers a couple of months ago here.

Biomaterials
ebm-papst apply the same energy-saving philosophy to their own production. ebm's production facilities are designed to provide maximum efficiency, including photovoltaic power generation and heat recycling. Their advances extend even further, and ebm-papst's latest innovations include the field of biomaterials.
Materials are a particular interest to me, and I am fascinated that, for the first time, ebm are creating fans using an advanced composite material called Epylen. This fascinating material contains less plastic and makes use of renewable wood taken from managed local forests. This is the first time I have come across the use of such an advanced composite material in the electronics industry. I think we can expect big things in the field of biomaterials very soon.
