HWRacing leaps into the future of Formula Student

HWRacing is Heriot-Watt University’s Formula Student team. The team was founded in 2009 by a core team of eight members and now consists of over 70 team members based across Heriot-Watt’s Edinburgh and Dubai campuses. Although the core of the team and manufacturing operations are based in Edinburgh, we pride ourselves on our international collaboration – working closely across the two campuses ensures that we can design the best entry possible. This year, the team is entering its first Concept Class entry in addition to our Class 1 Formula Student entry. The Concept Class entry will mostly be organized by the overseas campuses and will be an excellent foundation on which future generations of HWRacing vehicles will be based.

This year’s entry for the competition will be radically different to our vehicle that last raced at Silverstone in 2019. Following a successful run with a Honda CBR600RR engine that took us to 6th overall in the 2017 competition, the team decided to switch to an Electric Powertrain. We faced many challenges during the development of our EV powertrain, especially due to the global situation during which the EV powertrain was developed, but now it is ready to move into the future by unveiling the new generation of HWRacing vehicles. The support of the Build Fund will be fundamental in achieving our first EV as we will be able to use RS Components’ extensive catalogue to buy a large variety of wiring harness parts, from basic commodities such as wire and heat-shrink to rugged automotive connectors. This will take us one step closer to having a successful EV. In addition, this year’s vehicle will feature HWRacing’s first carbon fibre aerodynamic package.

With the help of the RS Grass Roots Build Fund, HWRacing is ready to leap into the future of the automotive industry thanks to its change to an EV powertrain and extensive research into new and composite materials. After two years of absence, the team is very excited to return to Silverstone to showcase the new and exciting technologies that have been developed for HWR-11.
