Panasonic recommended high capacity relays for energy management devices.

Panasonic offers high capacity relays as solutions for battery storage systems, fast charging stations, and inverters. This time, the role of high capacity relays and the product information will be introduced by focusing on the inverters application.

Inverters to support solar power systems

Solar power systems generate electricity by converting solar energy into electrical energy. In order to realize a stable supply of electricity, the system is mainly composed of solar cells (solar panels), inverters, storage batteries, junction boxes, and distribution boards.

In particular, the inverter converts the electricity generated by solar power generation into electricity that can be used at home, and is a critical device in order to maintain efficient operation of the solar power system.

High capacity relays useful for inverter application

(1) AC Side Safety Cutoff

Relays are used to safely shut down power grids. When an abnormal current is generated in an inverter, it is required to cut the current to prevent the inverter’s power supply side from possible damage. High capacity relays are used with inverters as part of safety measures to protect the electric power grid system.

(2) Standalone Operations

During normal operations of an inverter, contacts of a relay for standalone operations are in the OFF state, however, the inverter is designed to turn the contacts of the relay ON when activating its standalone function in the event of a blackout due to a problem. Relays are used as safety measures and for standalone operations.

(3) Junction Box (for DC cutoff)

A junction box can maintain the safety of a solar power generation system by cutting off DC lines during disasters such as fires. For further safety measures, the box can cut off high currents in case abnormalities occur when it is connected to storage batteries (80 to 300 A types). Additionally, the junction box can be remotely controlled during the maintenance of the solar panels, thereby reducing maintenance costs.
