How to deal with wide traces connected to narrow IC pins

pwdixon

There are times when a trace needs to be wide to deal with the current but this causes a problem when the same trace is connected to an IC leg that is narrower than the required trace.  This is typically when 'say' a chip is monitoring the voltage on a current sense resistor and the IC doesn't actually need to pass the high current.

How is this catered for on the laypout or must somethig like a zero ohm resistor be used to isolate the IC pin and allow for a thinner trace to the IC pin?  Or is there a specific component that consists of a small pad connected to a larger pad available to enable this trace width reduction?
