How Eaton keep the lights of Industry on

by GreigRS

The move from fluorescent lamps to LED lighting in industrial facilities is transforming energy usage. This move is driven by both technological advances and recent legislation prohibiting the production of new fluorescent lamps (2023). Over time, this move will bring about cost savings while helping to meet environmental regulations.

Fluorescent lighting is widespread across industry, mainly because of its relatively low initial cost and efficiency compared to the older incandescent options.

However, LED lighting brings superior energy efficiency, longer operational life, and relatively low maintenance costs, making it an attractive option for lighting within industrial settings.

The transition from fluorescent to LED will not happen overnight, but as the fluorescent supply diminishes, more businesses will need to make the switch. So, with this in mind, we talked with Vishvanath Pharakate from Eaton to consider key points, including advice on lighting levels, hazardous environments, battery backup, and retrofitting.

  • LEDs consume up to 80% less electricity than fluorescents, an important consideration for facilities with large lighting needs, resulting in real cost savings over time.
  • LEDs have a longer operational life, typically lasting up to 50,000 hours, thus resulting in less maintenance required, again adding to cost savings.
  • The initial cost of LEDs can be higher, but the longer-term savings make them a cost-effective choice.
  • Retro-fitting is possible, so a phased approach can be implemented.
