The ABU Robocon is a robotics contest held across Asia-Pacific where university students inside the region compete to perform given tasks within the time limit. Each year, the contest has a different set of rules. A general format over the years requires each team to make two robots. The theme for Robocon 2015 is “Robominton.” Two robots, one with wireless and one with wired control, of a team cooperate with each other to play robots’ double badminton game with an opponent team. The HKUST champion team will represent Hong Kong in ABU Robocon 2015 to be held in Yogyakarta,, Indonesia from 21-25 August.

Robocon 2015 Hong Kong Contest attracted ten teams from six higher education institutes, namely CityU, CUHK, HKUST, IVE, PolyU and HKU. The two HKUST teams are formed by 29 undergraduate students who are from the School of Engineering and School of Science. The students are co-supervised by Prof Tim Woo, Director of the Center for Global & Community Engagement (GCE) and Associate Professor of Engineering Education and Prof Shaojie Shen, Assistant Professor of Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering.

The robots designed by HKUST are stable and robust. The excellent mechanical design allows our robots to facilitate quicker transitions. By making use of high acceleration and advanced pneumatics, our robots perform well on long-range hitting. Besides, our robots are well-equipped by simplistic yet effective hardware and efficient software algorithms.

Heartfelt thanks go to RS Components for sponsoring the electronic components and equipment.

We wish HKUST’s Robotics Team the very best in the international competition in Indonesia!

Engineering students are encouraged to take part in a variety of external competitions such as the Robocon Hong Kong Contest outside their regular curriculum, where they can apply what they learn, develop skills in various aspects, and widen their global perspectives. One such popular external competition is the Robocon Hong Kong Contest since 2004. To benefit more students from the new learning experience, the Robocon Team, now called the HKUST Robotics Team, has been expanded in 2010. The Robotics Team members will represent the HKUST to participate in major events namely the Robocon Contest, the Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) competition, the Smart Car Competition and the NAO RoboCup. Besides robotics competition, the Robotics team would like to encourage students to explore in other areas. We have also taken part in various of presentation competitions and entrepreneur competitions in order to encourage students to become excellent leaders.
