Flying Drones - Always fly Safe.

title

This post will just touch on safety and legal aspects of flying a drone in the UK, whilst this is not definitive it should be read as an awareness article for you to further research safe working and legal requirements in your location from the relevant authorities.

There have been many reported incidents of dangerous and unthoughtful flying in the press, in most cases these type of incidents can be avoided by following the guidelines and rules from your local aviation authority.

Here in the UK we have the CAA (Civil aviation authority), which classify operation of drones for sport or recreational purposes under the same legal considerations as other model aircraft, the law makes no specific distinction on types of aircraft other than weight limits. For these types of activity the CAA articles 137, 138, 166 and 167 are to be followed. You can obtain 3rd party insurance for recreational flying by joining the BMFA (British Model Flying Association) the benefits of this is that in your annual subscription you will be updated via the BMFA news magazines of any developments in the articles.

Should you want to get paid for flying a drone then this is considered as commercial activity not only will you have to abide by the above mentioned articles, you should seek the relevant permissions and insurances to cover your activity.

From the CAA website is this handy chart to help understand in brief what the articles lay down.
