Team Introduction

ESTACARS is a team with students from ESTACA (École supérieure des techniques aéronautiques et de construction automobile) in Laval, a French engineering school that specialises in the domain of transport. The team was created in 2011 and consists of 20 automobile engineering students from third year and fourth year. The team is divided into 2 departments, powertrain & embedded systems and mechanical with each department having one student as the head.

The mechanical department consists of 10 students who mainly work on the chassis, suspension, brakes etc. The main objectives for this division are to conceive, test, build and optimize the different mechanical parts of the car and to maximise the cornering and braking abilities of the car.  Whereas the other 10 students are part of the powertrain and embedded systems department who mainly work on the electrical systems as well as the safety systems of the car. Their main objectives are to design, build and test the different electrical components of the car and optimise the overall motor performance. The team is supervised by tutors who are college professors and by the faculty advisor.

The 2021-2022 team

Team history

ESTACARS being an academic project of ESTACA has always had motivated students who have managed to achieve new feats even with some time and budget constraints. The team first competed in the “Trophée SIA”, a former French equivalent of the Formula Student. With the end of this competition in 2013, the team entered into the world of Formula Student on an international scale in 2014. Our first Formula Student car was built in 2016 and it was named FSE01, for Formula Student ESTACA 01, and by participating in the Formula ATA in Italy, with this car, ESTACARS became the first French formula student team to have participated in a Formula Student competition with an electric car.

The team then built its second car the FSE02 for the 2017-2018 season and with this new vehicle the venue of the competition changed as well and the team participated in 2018 for the first time in the FSUK.

Ongoing missions and upcoming plans

This year the team will be participating in the concept class of the FSUK with its third car, the FSE03, which is set to enter into production in August 2022 and then participate in the FS electric class for the 2023 season. The team’s objectives for the FSE03 are, to set clear targets and build a simple vehicle that achieves these targets and learn from the feedback of the previous competitions & vehicles. In the coming years, the team plans on expanding into the more innovative and technologically challenging part of the Formula Student competition by building autonomous cars as the team plans on participating in both electric and driverless class.
