Empowering Women in Engineering: The FemEng Arduino Garage
Introduction
At FemEng, we are passionate about supporting women in engineering. Our society provides a safe space to connect, discuss challenges, and explore technical innovation together. One of our key initiatives is the FemEng Arduino Garage. One of our key initiatives is the FemEng Arduino Garage, a year-long workshop designed to introduce students to electronics and programming through hands-on learning with Arduino.
Workshop Structure & Highlights
The 2024/25 FemEng Arduino Garage kicked off with an Intro Night on November 7, 2024, where we outlined the workshop structure and expectations. Applications closed on November 30, and weekly sessions were held every Thursday at 6 PM, covering:
- Arduino hardware fundamentals (sensors, motors, and microcontrollers)
- Programming basics using C++ and Arduino IDE
- Hands-on challenges to reinforce learning
- Guidance on developing personal projects
The final session before the holiday break was on November 28, after which the workshop resumed in January, running biweekly until the competition on April 1, 2025. Thanks to RS sponsorship, participants received essential components to bring their project ideas to life.
Project Showcase
Participants worked on diverse projects, one of such is a knitting stitch counter. These projects demonstrated creativity, problem-solving, and real-world application of engineering principles. They would have the opportunity to showcase their efforts at a competition during the April Offer Holder’s Day 2025 and compete for prizes.
The funding and components received from RS Components has been invaluable, providing us with the necessary components for individual projects and prizes to make this competition a success.
