micro usb: surface mount by handheld soldering

JOEYTHEDREAM

For the help of DesignSpark pcb, I am working on a trial project which a micro usb port is included. My eye was caught by "through hole" mount type.

However, it is found that the 5 pins are covering by the metal case and pins are seen to be too short by soldering with a handhold soldering iron. hm...... I guess that the insulation part with 5 pins can be separated from the metal case before installation. After the five pins are soldered, the metal case will be jacked in and mounted on the pcb board. Is it the correct procedure to do so ? Or the usb port is not for handhold soldering, it must be installed by automatic soldering machine ?

I just have a few SMD soldering experience and thanks for your help.
