Drone Racing – what you need to know

If you need to get up to speed with drone racing, now is a perfect time! DesignSpark’s new podcast series – The Engineering Edge – launched last week and our first episode sees Professor Lucy Rogers visiting the UK Drone Racing Open to witness some of Europe’s top pilots compete to be crowned the British Champion.

These are not your average drones, we’re talking racing drones here, where modification is critical to success. Check out The Merkle’s Top 5 drone racing facts here.

Drone racing isn’t just for hobbyists – The World Drone Prix in Dubai was the first million-dollar drone race, with the winning team taking home a cool $250,000. Don't get too excited just yet, this is the exception and definitely not the rule!

The agility of these quads is quite astounding! Watch this TED talk to discover the dazzling athletic power of quadcopters and understand (some of!) the science behind these tiny flying machines.

There are lots of different racing leagues all over the world. We visited the UK Drone Racing Open International event – which was also hosting an FAI F9U World Cup qualifying race – organised by the British Drone Racing Association (BDRA). If you've got some time to spare, you can watch it here:
