The Vishay water-cooled wirewound resistor saves space by reducing the number of components required to dissipate heat.  By providing direct liquid cooling without the need for a heat sink, the Vishay MCB device is optimized as a snubber and DC grading resistor for large drives, high voltage inverters, rectifiers, and HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) transmission systems  / SVC (Static Var Compensators). In these applications, the device saves space by providing the power of six wirewound resistors or five thick film resistors in one single supply. Moreover, the WCR offers the possibility of having up to eight resistive functions in the form of one snubber or divider.

Pierre Chevalier the product marketing engineer at Vishay runs through the WCR Demonstration video showing how the Vishay water-cooled wirewound resistor reacts in the case of water flow failure.

Vishay has introduced a water-cooled wirewound resistor for high-power applications. The WCR offers very high power dissipation up to 2500 W at 60 °C water inlet temperature and tolerates high pulses up to 5000 W for 10 s.

The WCR features a resistance range from 4.7 Ω to 56 kΩ with a ± 5 % tolerance, a temperature coefficient of 100 ppm/°C, and a maximum working voltage to 3500 V. (6600 V is available upon request.) The RoHS-compliant device offers a non-inductive option below 250 nH and operates over a temperature range of -55 °C to +120 °C.

The main focus of this product is for usage where the permanent power is bigger than 1000-1500 W. Three models are available 1500, 2000 and 2500W @ 5 l/min and 60 ° C water inlet temperature. The typical applications are Snubber, Permanent discharge, Balancing and Filtering.

The benefits of the WCR inside a power chain are as following:

  • No need to implement a heatsink and multiple resistances: cost saving on assembly
  • Possibility to provide several resistive functions on the same support (snubber + discharge  for ex.): rationalization of component for the same usage
  • Surface temperature rise  < 150 ° C: low disturbance for surrounding components
  • Direct connection to water circuit per G3/8 female: ease for connecting on a cooling system
