Design

I do not have a problem in seeing the 3rd dimension, that being said would it be better to design in total 3D creating a unit or use both 2D and 3D to create components for later assembly to the unit?

Fundamentally most if not all designs are first made in 2D.
It is best to use components If the design calls for it, so as to keep the different parts seperate from each other. If you don't then you will have a hard time keeping the parts individual. The program will automattically join parts drawn on a solid into one solid, unless the part is a component. Were you have to 'activate' the component to edit it.
