How is plastic insulation inserted into body of connector, are special tools required?

There may be. Have a look at this AMP part https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/sma-connectors/7455937 in "explore all technical documents", some of the tools may not be required for a few off use.
This one https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/sma-connectors/7123258/ except for the outer crimp does not appear to need any special tools.
All connectors I have used (which is not many varieties) did not require a tool to insert the insulator, it has been a slide fit, just ensure you keep the parts aligned and do not scuff the insulator external wall as this will snag when trying to assemble.
