Report: Sony UK TEC 1-0 RS Components

As the lights went dark at the Cardiff City Stadium, a large roar could be heard coming from a very happy home dressing room.

After two consecutive defeats for the Sony UK Technology Centre team at the hands of RS Components in their annual charity football fixtures, the Welsh based side had finally exorcised the demons and inflicted sweet revenge on their opponents from Northamptonshire in a tight fought affair.

For the past three years teams representing RS Components and Sony have faced each other to raise money for two worthwhile causes. Sony UK TEC raise money around the fixture for the children’s ward at Princess of Wales Hospital, while RS Components raise money for their chosen charity, Children with Cancer UK.

RS Components had made the 3 hour journey to the Welsh capital eager to build on their previous results, however they found a resolute opponent waiting for them at the home of Cardiff City FC.

Despite having lost last year’s star player Lewis James to injury pre-match, Gareth Boulding’s Sony dominated the opening proceedings as RS struggled to get into the game and had to weather a storm of attacks from the side in blue.

Sony went close on a number of occasions to opening the scoring, with Andy “Alex” Mullin keeping RS level with a well-timed challenge on 6 minutes, before goalkeeper Gavin Garscadden showed lightning quick reactions to prevent the lively Thomas Davies from close range.

RS started to grow into the game and their first real chance arrived on 11 minutes as Milan Ceko cut the ball back to Joe Bennett. Sadly for Bennett he found the opposition goalkeeper Jack Powell in top form and equal to his effort.

This was the queue for the game to spring into life with chances opening up at both ends, with Jon Williams dictating the game for Sony in the middle of the park.

RS’ best chances had fallen to Vishal Chhatralia and debutant Liam Sheridan, however neither had been able to rattle the back of the net.

Only a mix of poor finishing and greats saves from both goalkeepers ensured that the sides were level as the whistle blew for half time, with Andy Keenan probably the more relived managed to still be on terms at the break.

Sony started the second half on the front foot and Davies again went close with a curling effort from the edge of the box.

On 51 minutes Nicky Young worked himself into a good position down the right hand side for RS, but after his initial cross was blocked and dropped back to him he decided to take on the shot and failed to trouble Sony’s goalkeeper.

RS were looking much improved after the break and were matching their opponents all over the pitch. Both sides were playing some good football and creating plenty of goal scoring opportunities, but neither could find the cutting edge in the final third to make it count.

Gavin Garscadden had again been key to keeping his side level between the sticks, however there was little he could do to prevent Sony from scoring what turned out to be the only goal of the game, as Davies danced down the left wing and pulled the ball back to super-sub Steve Dalton OBE to tap home from close range.

Dalton, who joined Sony as a graduate in 1983 and is now the Managing Director of Sony UK Technology Centre, had been sent on to provide his experience and it paid off.

RS searched in vain for an equalising goal and continued to fight until the final whistle, however they couldn’t find a way past the resolute Sony defence or prevent their hosts from clinching the trophy for the first time.

With RS having now won just one more game than Sony, next year already promises to be another mouth-watering affair to look forward to.

A huge well done to the players from both RS Components and Sony UK Technology Centre for another competitive and entertaining charity match… bring on next year!

Also a massive thank you to everybody at Sony and Cardiff City FC for their magnificent hospitality.
