Have you heard about Petunia LED Grow Lights?

It’s not just for Astronauts…

You may have seen the momentous event that happened 250 miles above your head on 10th August this year.

ISS astronauts Scott Kelly, Kjell Lindgren and Kimiya Yui became the first to consume food grown in space. Even with their slightly cringey tweet: "That’s one small bite for a man, one giant leaf for mankind", this event will be remembered for many years to come.

This is not just for space travel, although this will allow us to travel to Mars, this is for all of us here down on planet earth.

So how have they done this?

We all know plants need sunlight to grow, right? Well apparently not all of the sunlight. Horticultural research has established that radiation at some relatively narrow spectral bands can optimize chlorophyll absorption in plants that in turn drives the photosynthesis process critical to plant growth.  Each plant needs its own tailored Spectral Power Distribution to achieve the best results, but two basic colours will give you a very good starting point, 660 and 450 nanometers can significantly stimulate plant growth while drastically reducing energy consumption through the use of targeted lighting.

ILS have combined Osram’s world class horticultural LED’s, and Ledil’s array lens for horticultural lighting, to bring out a useful starter growth light - Petunia.

PETUNIA lens array designed specifically for plant lighting fixtures. The current medium beam is ideal for use in fixtures mounted a few meters above plant growth beds. The low-profile and densely-spaced PETUNIA array offers the ability to design a compact fixture for use in crowded greenhouses. One of the biggest advantages of using PETUNIA lenses and OSRAM OSLON® LEDs is the tremendous reduction in energy cost and the ability to deliver growing plants the light spectrum needed throughout their growth cycle.

FEATURES and BENEFITS

• Densely-spaced 12 lens array

• Compact 3x4 pattern

• Medium beam angle

• High light transmission efficiency

• Virtually impervious to damage by UV radiation

• High scratch and abrasion resistance

It may not be changing everyone’s world today, but LED horticulture is staying and there are some exciting concepts;

A mega trend: Urban farming, urban planting and urban gardening

Producing agricultural products for people in areas of high population density with very low levels of energy, without pesticides and with the use of already existing urban spaces. And, of course, with distribution channels that are as short as possible. The result is healthy products and a low carbon footprint. These are the main characteristics of urban plant cultivation initiatives that are becoming increasingly popular on a global scale. Projects range from individual residencies in large cities with roof terraces and groups of interested people using small open spaces, to highly potent start-ups cultivating on a large scale and now financed by investment companies.
