Energy Harvesting Switches from CHERRY

The demand for wireless solutions for the transfer of data or power without the need for a power source is rapidly increasing. The sheer variety of applications across a wide range of environments poses a challenge for the most seasoned design engineer. The experts over at CHERRY - industry leaders in the fields of switching and sensor technology - have accepted that challenge. Let's take a look at how they have responded...

Energy harvesting switch solutions from CHERRY use an innovative little energy harvesting generator providing easy and flexible data or power transmission with no battery or power source required to operate.

CHERRY have realised that this new technology means that customers might need a helping hand to get started, and so they have introduced the energy harvesting evaluation kit for use with wireless applications, available exclusively from RS Components. The AFIK-1002 features an energy harvesting switch function that requires no battery or switch power feed to operate, which makes it virtually maintenance free and highly reliable during its long life time.

The kit provides the user with a functional demonstration of the technology and the ability to test key parameters, such as signal strength and range in the application of their choice. The kit comprises an Energy Harvesting Generator, Snap Switch, Rocker Switch, Receiver (with antenna bushing), USB cable & receiver manual.

And now, for the first time, the switch and receiver products are also available as individual items for those users who like the technology and want to create their own bespoke systems.

Applications for this technology are vast, ranging from lighting in smart homes through to industrial automation. The video linked below describes the technology plus provides some inspiration for possible applications. So what do you need to think about when designing using the AFIK-1002 energy harvesting evaluation kit?
