Do you have problems with transparent object detection in Packaging?

Transparent and translucent objects offer photo-electric sensors a challenge in that it is difficult to achieve stable sensing conditions with these materials.  In order to overcome this problem the traditional sensing solution is to use a retro-reflective type sensor, whereby the sensor uses a reflector mounted opposite the sensing head and means the target object will disrupt the light beam when it is present.

However in many situations where space is minimal and room is not available for a traditional solution a reflective sensor solution can overcome the problem.

Convergent beam reflective sensing is an alternative to the traditional retro-reflective solution and is one of the technologies utilised in Panasonics range of NO SPACE sensing solutions.  Within the Panasonic EX series of sensors a convergent beam solution is available in a very compact package allowing the reliable detection of transparent objects including glass, nylon, polycarbonate etc .

How does it work

Convergent beam technology focuses the sensors light source within a limited range and results in a very sensitive sensing area that allows transparent objects to be detected.   The Panasonic range of NO SPACE sensing solutions offer a compact solution for this and some of the toughest applications.  The following video demonstrates the Panasonic EX-28 model sensor detecting a semi-transparent object.
