Successful Start for the 2017 HKUST Robotics Team with the 8th Robot Design Contest

The 8th Robot Design Contest has been held on 28th November 2016, in which the new training members of the HKUST Robotics Team competed against each other in teams with their own robots that they designed over the past month before the competition.

This annual competition is a part of new member recruitment process for the HKUST Robotics Team. Despite the challenging task of this year’s competition, which consisted of developing 2 different robots, the training members showed amazing robot designs and there were a lot of exciting moments throughout the competition as they revealed their unique techniques and designs. This year, there were 123 students participating in the competition. The students were from over 15 different countries and from a diverse academic background, each of them participating from the School of Engineering, School of Science and School of Business and Management. The diverse nature of the participants this year cultivated a positive environment in which the students actively interacted with each other and learn from each other to achieve a mutual goal.

The senior members of the Robotics team supported the contestants throughout the preparation and development of their robots, providing them with tutorials on electronics, mechanics and software programming. The members were also largely involved in the organization of the competition as well. Rex, Ho Kei Cheng (CSE, Year 2), Chairman of the Contest Management Committee for the Robot Design Contest this year, described his experience at the competition as both “an exciting chance to interact with students with passion for robotics and interesting experience to get actively involved in the organization of such event.”

The contest marked a great success for the HKUST Robotics Team, highlighting the potential that all the training members had for robotics innovation. We hope to hear further successful news from the future activities of the HKUST Robotics Team!

This contest is supported by Engineering Engagement FESTIVAL. Engineering Engagement FESTIVAL is an annual event organized by the Center for Global & Community Engagement (GCE). The FESTIVAL aims at introducing different opportunities to students so that they can make a difference in their university life. Here are 4 main areas in the FESTIVAL:

  1. Engineering Engagement Opportunities (Overseas)
  2. Design & Project Competitions (Local & Overseas)
  3. Student Chapters of Professional Institutes
  4. Public Exhibition, Seminar & Outreach Activities

The Center for Global & Community Engagement (GCE) would like to express heartfelt appreciation to RS Components Ltd for sponsoring prizes to the Champion team. RS’ partnership with HKUST Robotics Team started in 2011 in sponsoring electronics components and equipment for several robotic competitions. With their support, the Robotics Team members demonstrate their talents in robot design with the appropriate and reliable components.

By Contest Management Committee Member & HKUST Robotics Team Senior Member - Hongseo Yoon (CPEG, Year2)

Engineering students are encouraged to take part in a variety of external competitions such as the Robocon Hong Kong Contest outside their regular curriculum, where they can apply what they learn, develop skills in various aspects, and widen their global perspectives. One such popular external competition is the Robocon Hong Kong Contest since 2004. To benefit more students from the new learning experience, the Robocon Team, now called the HKUST Robotics Team, has been expanded in 2010. The Robotics Team members will represent the HKUST to participate in major events namely the Robocon Contest, the Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) competition, the Smart Car Competition and the NAO RoboCup. Besides robotics competition, the Robotics team would like to encourage students to explore in other areas. We have also taken part in various of presentation competitions and entrepreneur competitions in order to encourage students to become excellent leaders.
