Makerfaire UK 28-29 April 2018 Newcastle

I know the children are our future and all that, but sometimes I think they get all the fun. So I am really excited to be going to the UK MakerFaire in Newcastle 28-29 April 2018.

Yes, of course, there will be plenty for kids to do there, but there will also be things for the over 18’s too.

The MakerFaire is bringing together over 300 hackers, crafters, coders, DIYers and garden shed inventors. People who love to make stuff and who want to share their passion with the public. Arts and crafts, drones and electronics all feature as well as rockets, music and upcycling. I’m looking forward to meeting and chatting with like-minded makers. Finding out what they do and gaining some inspiration from their exciting projects. Even if I have to sidestep round some kids first.

The YouTube filmmaker, inventor and record breaker, Colin Furze will be there with some of his inventions – such as his hoverbike, ejector bed, record-breaking mobility scooter, flame-throwing guitar and X-Men inspired Wolverine claws. I’m also looking forward to seeing The Herd – a scrapheap safari, with ‘wild beasts’ roaming around. It’s performance art, created by the company foolpool. Their skill and ingenuity in upcycling old bikes into mechanical animals makes me drool.

Foolpool: The Herd of Mechanical Creatures

I’ll be there on the Guild of Makers stand  – located in the DesignSpark Maker Village. In our village there will also be some battling robots – it’ll be good to catch up with them, although I’ll try not to be too judgemental.

The Guild of Makers stand itself will be an "adult chill zone". There will be Lego and other making and fun things to do. And some chairs, so that you can have a rest. And you can talk to other makers who are or want to make professionally.  Or just sit and make things without talking and let the world go by.

The DesignSpark team will also be around if you want to talk electronic components, about the community, coding or making in general. And I’m sure they’ll be delighted to tell you all about the DesignSpark Maker Marketplace – where you can buy and sell maker-created products or projects.
