There are two versions of the 8MP Camera Board to choose from – Standard Visible and Pi NoIR. You can take digital still images or HD video on both, the only difference between the two is that Pi NoIR has no infrared (IR) filter making it great for videos or photography in the dark.
There are a number of features including slow-motion and time-lapse settings for a wide range of uses. The standard model is ideal for home security applications as well as watching wildlife and for botanical purposes. Pi NoIR is perfect for still photography and video at night. IR LEDs allow you to see in the dark – ideal for monitoring nocturnal animals.
The camera has a built-in 15 cm ribbon cable which slots straight into the Pi’s CSI (Camera Serial Interface) port and use various APIs, including Multi-Media Abstraction Layer (MMAL) and Video for Linux (V4L). Other libraries are accessible online, such as Picamera Python.
